Choosing where to elope depends on the kind of experience you want to have. Some couples picture mountains and alpine lakes, others imagine desert landscapes, coastal cliffs, or iconic national parks. The best place to elope is the one that fits how you want the day to feel: the scenery, the season, the level of adventure, and whether you’re bringing guests along
You know you want to elope. But how do you choose where to elope? That’s where it can start to feel overwhelming; there are so, so many amazing elopement locations! Mountains, beaches, deserts, national parks, hidden gems. Every place looks incredible and perfect. Every blog makes it sound like the obvious choice.
And suddenly you start to wonder… What if we pick the wrong one? What if I’m always wishing I had chosen a different spot? Truth is, there isn’t one perfect place to elope. But there is a place that fits you. Not just the prettiest backdrop. Not just what’s trending. But the location that matches how you want the day to feel, how adventurous you want it to be, whether you’re bringing guests, what season you’re dreaming of, and what kind of experience actually reflects your relationship.
Most couples come to us not knowing exactly where they want to elope. They come knowing they want something intentional, meaningful, and different from a traditional wedding. And to be honest, finding the location that fits is half the fun for us!
This guide is here to help you narrow it down, not by listing random “best” elopement destinations, but by helping you figure out what fits.
What kind of elopement experience are you dreaming of?
Before you think about states or national parks, starting here is the most important part of figuring out where to elope. We like to do a fun exercise with couples when we get on a call. We’ll ask them to close their eyes for a minute and picture their wedding day. Not the logistics. Not the guest list. Just the setting. What does it look like?
- Are you standing in the mountains? Or maybe next to a
- Is there snow under your boots, or maybe some snow on the peaks?
- Is the air warm and dry, or cool and crisp?
- Is it coastal? Do you feel the wind off the ocean?
- Are you surrounded by desert light and open sky?
- Are the grasses green? Are there wildflowers? Are the leaves changing?
Most couples already know the feeling they’re drawn to. They just haven’t slowed down long enough to trust it. Let’s break down some experiences:

Mountain Adventure Elopement
If you’re dreaming of snow-covered peaks, alpine lakes, crisp air, and space that makes everything feel a little smaller in the best way, then you are definitely mountain people, and a mountain elopement is definitely the way to go.
Mountain elopements often mean cooler temps, epic sunsets, and a little movement built into the day – great for couples who don’t mind getting their shoes a little dirty and who feel most at home outside.
This is where places like Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, and Idaho really get to shine.
Coastal, or Ocean vibes
If you see cliffs dropping into the waves and water, or maybe you’re barefoot on the sand at sunset, you might find a beautiful coastline fits here. Coastal elopements feel open and alive. Sometimes moody, sometimes golden, and always moving.
They’re often more accessible than deep mountain hikes, but still give you that sense of scale. And if you are into it, places where the mountains meet the sea are magical, and some of our favorite elopement destinations!
The California Coast, Oregon Coast, Washington Coast, and the Alaska Coast are all so good!
Desert Landscapes
If your mental image feels warm, quiet, and wide open, a desert elopement might be great for you. Deserts bring bold blue skies, dramatic sunsets, and a kind of stillness that feels intentional and powerful. They’re ideal for couples who want something different from forests and peaks, and who are drawn to texture and light. These are also great for warm winter elopement destinations.
California, Nevada, Utah, & Arizona have some fantastic desert locations for your elopement.
Forests & Lakes
Some couples picture something quieter: a trail through trees, a lake at sunrise, a private meadow, or a grove of giant Redwoods. These spots often feel immersive and intimate, and work wonderfully for elopements.
Montana, Idaho, the Sierra Nevada, Redwood forests, and Alaska fit beautifully here.
Remote Wilderness (Glaciers, meadows, mountain peaks)
Or maybe you’re dreaming of the most dramatic, unique type of elopement. These adventure opportunities don’t always require miles of hiking, and the possibilities are endless. This is where dreams come true, bucket lists get checked off, and we create some really amazing experiences: dog sledding to a glacier ceremony, exploring ridgelines on side by sides, boat taxis to private coastlines, or helicopters to truly beautiful, private, and remote elopement ceremonies. The payoff is unreal.
If you close your eyes and the image feels massive and untouched, this might be for you. You can be standing on a glacier, or you could be alone on a ridgeline with no trail in sight. Maybe you arrive by helicopter, boat, side by side, or snowmachine. These kinds of elopements don’t always require miles of hiking, but they do require intention and thoughtful planning. They’re ideal for couples who want privacy, scale, and an experience that feels immersive from start to finish.
Alaska leads the way here, but there are possibilities for this type of adventure elopement everywhere.
National Parks & Scenic Overlooks
If you’re drawn to the most iconic landscapes, places like Yosemite, Glacier NP, or the Tetons. There’s something powerful about standing somewhere that already feels legendary. Maybe it’s Yosemite’s granite walls, Glacier’s peaks, or the giant Tetons rising straight out of the valley. These landscapes are iconic for a reason. Standing there feels significant.
National Park elopements can be beautiful and meaningful. They also come with more structure, permits, and often more people than couples expect. We love photographing in National Parks. We also love showing couples places just outside those boundaries, where you get similar scenery with more flexibility and a little more space to breathe. Many incredible elopement locations exist on public lands managed by agencies like the Bureau of Land Management.
Some great locations fit here, check out Grand Teton NP, Glacier Np, Yosemite, and Olympic NP, hop on the NPS website to find a new one – here is the link.
And the truth is, most places don’t fit perfectly into one category. Mountains meet the ocean. Deserts sit beside alpine peaks. Lakes hide in remote valleys. This isn’t about choosing a box. It’s about noticing what you’re drawn to.
One thing to remember in any of these types of locations, is to Leave No Trace. If you are not familiar, have a quick look here. It’s the basic practice of preserving our public lands.

How adventurous, or accessible, do you want this elopement to be?
Now you have a setting pictured in your head. The next question is just as important: How do we get there? You can absolutely elope somewhere you can drive right up to. And for some couples, that’s exactly right. But when there’s a little movement involved, something shifts. Walking a trail together before the ceremony, waking up early for first light, riding out to a remote coastline by boat, landing on a glacier by helicopter. Those moments aren’t just for fun (well, maybe a little). They become part of the memory. Part of the experience. They slow the day down. They create space. The experience allows you both to interact together naturally. It gives us something real to capture beyond “stand here and smile.”
That’s why we always recommend weaving some level of adventure into the experience. Not because it needs to be extreme. But because it makes the day feel like something you lived through together, not just something you showed up for. We have a lot of great ideas here, but if you need some adventure elopement ideas, check out this blog post.
Minimal Hiking / Easy Access
Some couples want incredible scenery without a physical challenge. There are beautiful overlooks, lakes, and coastlines that require little to no hiking. This works well if you’re bringing guests with limited mobility, eloping in winter, or simply want to keep things straightforward. Accessible doesn’t mean less meaningful. It just means the experience is designed differently.
This amount of adventure can sometimes have a little less privacy, but the scenery is still amazing.
Moderate Adventure
This is where most couples land. A short hike, paddle, or gondola ride, and likely starting at that perfect time to be out for that epic sunset. You’re moving, but it feels fun and exciting, not exhausting.
You’ll get privacy and beautiful scenery, and the journey becomes part of the story.
Remote & Immersive
If what you’re picturing feels tucked away and harder to reach, this might be for you. Maybe you’re riding horseback into a meadow. Or maybe you’re taking a 4×4 up to a backcountry ridge, or kayaking out to an island with no one else around.
These days usually unfold over more time and involve more moving pieces. But that’s part of what makes them feel immersive. You’re creating an experience together, and a very special experience.
Helicopter, Boat, or Access by Air/Water
Some dreamy landscapes simply aren’t reachable by trail. Instead of hiking miles, you might be hiring a helicopter, boat, or even a dogsled or side-by-side to travel into terrain that feels untouched. It’s less about physical effort and more about coordination, intention, and epic landscapes.
These types of adventure elopements often create scale, privacy, and a very unique experience all at once.
There’s no “right” level of adventure. The right choice is the one that matches your energy and the kind of day you want to look back on and say, that felt like us. When it feels like you, your photos will reflect your connection, the excitement of your marriage, and the amazing landscapes youdecide to explore.
When we help couples choose a location, this is one of the first conversations we have. Because the access level doesn’t just change the scenery. It changes the experience.

Will you be bringing guests?
This question shapes the location more than almost anything else. When it’s just the two of you, the possibilities open up. Remote ridgelines. Glacier landings. Sunrise starts. Places without parking lots or paved paths. We love when it’s just the four of us. It allows the day to feel fully immersive, all about you, and flexible.
Just the two of you
If it’s only the two of you, we can prioritize privacy, unique access, and locations that simply wouldn’t work for a group. This is where helicopters, boat access, and remote terrain shine. The day can move at your pace without needing to coordinate around anyone else.
A small group (under 10~12)
Small groups can work beautifully for many types of elopements: national parks, mountain overlooks, even certain helicopter or boat-access experiences. We’ve found that keeping the total group around 10–12 people (including us) grants us access to many more locations. In many National Parks, once the group gets larger than that, you’re limited to specific designated ceremony spots and lose flexibility elsewhere.
When the group stays small, we’re able to balance meaningful guest involvement with the kind of scenery and freedom most couples are hoping for.
Larger Guest Counts
Once the guest list grows beyond 10-12, location options narrow quickly.|
Permits become more restrictive. Access becomes more limited. Parking, crowd management, and comfort all become bigger factors. That said, we’ve photographed beautiful elopements with 20 or so guests, where everyone gathers for the ceremony, and then we head out with just the couple afterward for a more private, adventurous experience.
That structure often works well and allows you to include your people without sacrificing the immersive part of the day.
Whether it’s just the two of you or your closest circle, the key is understanding how your group size impacts location access, privacy, and the overall day. We’ll walk you through those trade-offs so you can make the best decision.
What season are you dreaming of?
Seasons can help you choose both where to elope and when to elope. The same mountain range can feel completely different in July than it does in October. A desert that’s beautiful in winter can be downright brutal in August. So instead of starting with location, sometimes it helps to start with the time of year.
Spring
Spring is unpredictable, and that’s part of the charm. Lower elevations start to turn green. Waterfalls run strong, and wildflowers start to show up. Snow is still melting in higher elevations, which is great for snow-covered peaks in the background. It’s a great time for deserts, coastlines, and mid-elevation mountains. Higher mountain roads may not be accessible yet. Flexibility is important.
Summer
Summer opens up access. High alpine roads and trails are usually open and clear. Wildflowers bloom strong in the mountains. Long days mean more light to work with, and services in touristy areas are in full swing. It’s also the busiest season in many national parks and mountain towns, but with a little planning, finding some quiet spots is still possible.
Fall
Fall brings crisp air, fewer crowds, and incredible color in the right places. But the window can be short, especially in alpine regions. Snow can arrive early, and some roads begin to close. But the good thing here is that we can generally chase the fall colors from the highest elevations to the lowest over the course of a couple of months. If you love the idea of golden light and changing leaves, this can be a beautiful choice.
Winter
Winter is quiet, dramatic, and often deeply personal. Snow transforms landscapes. Crowds disappear in many locations. And access becomes more limited, with ever-changing conditions requiring careful planning. Some areas really shine in winter. Others essentially shut down. Winter elopements are pretty amazing when all is planned accordingly.
When we help couples choose where to elope, we look at the season first. It quickly narrows the field and keeps you from committing to a location that won’t match the vision in your head.
The good news is that seasons shift differently across regions. When Glacier is buried in snow, the Sawtooths or the Sierra can be wide open. When one landscape is off its peak, another is just coming into its best window. There’s almost always a way to make it work. It just requires knowing where to look. We also use a weather app, like Weather.gov, to find trends and averages for the area too.
If you’re starting to realize there are a lot of directions this could go, you’re not alone.
If you’d like to talk through a few ideas together, we’re happy to help.
Where to elope – Privacy vs Iconic Scenery
This is one of the most honest questions you can ask yourselves. When you picture your elopement, are you imagining a place everyone recognizes instantly? Or are you picturing something that feels completely your own? There’s no wrong answer. But the choice does shape the experience.
Iconic Locations
Some couples are drawn to the places they’ve seen their whole lives. Yosemite’s granite walls. Glacier’s peaks. The Tetons rising out of the valley. There’s something powerful about standing somewhere that already feels legendary.
Iconic locations often come with structured permits, designated ceremony spots, and more foot traffic. With thoughtful timing and planning, they can still feel meaningful and intentional. But they rarely feel completely private.
Private & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Other couples care less about the name of the place and more about the feeling. A quiet ridge. A hidden lake. A stretch of coastline without another person in sight. These locations may not be on a postcard, but they often offer more flexibility, more intimacy, and more room to breathe. Sometimes they’re just outside national park boundaries. Sometimes they’re entirely different regions that most people overlook.
If privacy matters most to you, we’ll guide you toward locations that protect that space. If the iconic backdrop is part of your story, we’ll design the day to feel personal. The key isn’t choosing what’s trending. It’s choosing what aligns with how you want the moment to feel.

Some couples know from the beginning that they want to travel somewhere unforgettable. (If you need some inspiration here, just check out these sites for the Highlands, Iceland, or New Zealand. Then just say the word, our bags are packed!)
The planning process looks a little different, but the same questions still play a big part in the decision. If you’re dreaming about eloping somewhere abroad, we’d love to talk through what that could look like.

Still not sure? We can help
If you’re reading all of this and thinking, “Okay… but we still have no idea where to elope,” you’re definitely not alone. Most couples reach out to us feeling exactly the same way. They know they want something meaningful, adventurous, and different from a traditional wedding. But when it comes to choosing the exact place, there are simply too many gorgeous options.
That’s where we come in.
One of the first things we do when we start working with couples is talk through the kind of experience they’re drawn to. The landscape they picture. The season they’re imagining. Whether they want privacy, iconic scenery, or a mix of both. From there, we help narrow things down and suggest locations that truly fit what they’re envisioning. Sometimes that ends up being a place they’ve always dreamed about. Other times, it’s somewhere they had never heard of before.
It’s a fun and rewarding process for us; we get to share amazing places with you and help you find that perfect elopement location.
