Where to Elope in Alaska: A Guide to the Best Elopement Locations & Regions

Choosing where to elope in Alaska is a big decision (and rightly so since it’s the largest state in the U.S.). This state has so much variety to offer, and the landscapes change dramatically from region to region. In one area, you might find age-old ice glaciers and bright blue lagoons, and in another, quiet coastal towns that overlook fjords and the open ocean.

Because of that variety, the location you choose plays a big part in how your elopement experience unfolds. Some places are better for helicopter landings on glaciers, while others are best accessed by boat or kayak.

This guide breaks down some of the best places to elope in Alaska and what makes each region unique. We’re also sharing some of our favorite activities you can include to help you get a full picture of what your day here could look like.

Why elope in Alaska

It’s almost hard to put Alaka’s landscape into words. This state is massive, and its landscapes are incredibly beautiful and wild. Everywhere you look, there are mountains and glaciers and lakes sprawling as far as the eye can see.

And while the landscape itself is incredibly beautiful, what makes it even more special is that so many of these areas are largely untouched by human activity. This means it’s incredibly easy to find a jaw-dropping backdrop and have complete privacy when you elope.

Here are a few of the top reasons our couples choose an elopement in Alaska:

  • Epic scenery: Here you’ve got everything from glaciers, mountains, fjords, and remote wilderness that provide unforgettable backdrops.
  • Built-in adventure: In Alaska, any adventure is possible! Helicopters, floatplanes, dog sleds, and so many other activities can be part of your day.
  • Privacy and seclusion: It’s hard to describe the sheer vastness of Alaska. Because of its size, you have easy access to more remote locations, meaning fewer crowds and more intimate moments.
  • Multi-location possibilities: Planned correctly, it’s easy to access multiple locations during an elopement in Alaska. You can experience a glacier landing, a stroll through an ice cave, a lakeside ceremony, and mountain portraits all in one day.

Who an Alaska elopement is for

  • Couples who value adventure and want it woven into their day
  • Those seeking privacy or an intimate guest list under 12
  • Couples drawn to dramatic, unique landscapes or multiple locations in a single day
  • Those who want their elopement to be about experiences, not just a ceremony

Best Alaska elopement locations

Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai Peninsula is one of the most diverse places to elope in Alaska. Within a relatively short distance, you can explore alpine lakes, coastal cliffs, glaciers, and dense forests. This region offers the flexibility to design an elopement day that includes multiple landscapes without traveling far. It’s also where towns like Seward and Homer are located, making it a great base for couples who want both wilderness and small-town comforts.

  • Best time to elope: June through August are the best months as they have the least amount of rainfall and bugs.
  • Why we love it: Incredible variety of scenery, from glacier views to coastal landscapes.
  • Pro tip: This area works well for multi-stop elopement days that include hiking, boat access, or scenic viewpoints. It’s also great for heli-accessed locations if you want adventure without the long hike.

Seward, Alaska

Seward is one of our favorite Alaska elopement locations! Nestled between towering mountains and the waters of Resurrection Bay, it combines some of the best alpine and coastal scenery in the state. The town is known as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, so if exploring a national park is part of your itinerary, you can easily explore the surrounding glaciers, fjords, and wildlife either before or after your ceremony.

One of our couples eloped in Seward, and their day included a short hike to a helicopter pad, where we were then flown to a private, elevated ceremony spot with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and bay. Read the full story and see their helicopter elopement photos here.

  • Best time to elope: Summer for stable weather and longer daylight hours.
  • Why we love it: Dramatic coastal and mountain scenery, with plenty of accessible ceremony spots and photo opportunities.
  • Pro tip: If you’re eloping in Seward, consider staying at Salted Roots, one of our favorite lodging options and small wedding venues in Alaska.

Homer, Alaska

Homer sits along the shores of Kachemak Bay and offers a quieter, coastal feel compared to other Alaska destinations. Here you’ll find wide beaches, dramatic tides, and views across the bay that create a peaceful setting for your elopement. On clear days, you can see glaciers and mountains rising on the opposite side of the water. The town itself is small and has a more relaxed atmosphere, so it’s a great option for those who want a more laid-back Alaska elopement experience.

  • Best time to elope: Summer for the longest daylight and the most comfortable weather.
  • Why we love it: Coastal scenery, expansive beaches, and views across Kachemak Bay.
  • Pro tip: Sunset ceremonies on the beach can be especially beautiful when the light reflects across the water and mountains.

Palmer, Alaska & Hatcher Pass

Just outside of Anchorage (about an hour drive on the Glenn Highway), Palmer, Alaska, offers one of the most accessible alpine landscapes in Alaska. The winding mountain road leads to one of the best places to elope in Alaska, Hatcher’s Pass. Here you’ll find sweeping views of the hillsides and historic mining structures that add character to the scenery. During summer, wildflowers blanket the slopes, while early fall brings golden colors. It’s definitely a favorite location for couples who want mountain views without committing to a long backcountry trek.

  • Best time to elope: Summer for wildflowers and open roads, early fall for autumn colors.
  • Why we love it: Sprawling alpine meadows and peaks that are surprisingly easy to reach.
  • Pro tip: Hatcher Pass is one of our favorite Alaska elopement locations, as there are so many easily accessible trails. Plus, Hatchers Pass Lodge is one of the cutest mountain lodges you can stay at during your Alaska elopement.

Knik & Matanuska Glaciers

For couples dreaming of a glacier ceremony, Knik and Matanuska are two of the most iconic Alaska elopement locations. Massive icefields, bright blue glacier pools, and rugged surrounding mountains create an iconic landscape that Alaska is often known for. Many of our couples who elope here book a helicopter tour, as it allows for private landings in remote areas and the opportunity to visit multiple locations. If you want an elopement location that guarantees you’ll be the only people in sight, or just want to get married with the sound of shifting ice glaciers all around, this is the place to go!

  • Best time to elope: Summer for the most stable weather and the highest flight chances.
  • Why we love it: The scale and color of Alaska’s glaciers (trust us, this is one location you have to see for yourself!).
  • Pro tip: Helicopter and guided glacier tours allow you to land in multiple remote spots. Just know that helicopter flights are subject to the weather, so this is where timing really comes into play.

After their ceremony at Eklutna Lake, Shenae and Colin had their portraits taken on Knik Glacier. Read all about their multi-day elopement in Hatcher’s Pass, Alaska.

Girdwood, Alaska

Girdwood is a small mountain town just 40 minutes outside Anchorage that is surrounded by forested valleys, alpine ridgelines, and glacier-fed rivers. It offers a convenient home base for couples who don’t want to travel far, but still want to feel immersed in Alaska’s landscapes. The nearby Alyeska Resort (a luxury hotel that doubles as a basecamp for skiers and snowboarders) provides access to sweeping mountain views without requiring a long hike. As it’s one of the more luxurious places in Alaska, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a mix of adventure and comfort.

  • Best time to elope: Summer for lush greenery or winter for snowy alpine scenery.
  • Why we love it: A great balance of mountain landscapes and easy accessibility with town amenities.
  • Pro tip: Ride the Alyeska Aerial Tram to the summit for an incredible ceremony viewpoint with minimal effort.

Portage Valley

Portage Valley sits along the scenic drive between Anchorage and Seward and is known for its glacier views, lakes, and quiet forests. The valley is surrounded by steep mountains and often feels misty and dramatic, especially after rain. Several lakes and viewpoints provide beautiful ceremony spots, many within a short walk from the road. This is another great option for couples who want dramatic scenery with easy access.

  • Best time to elope: Summer for the best weather and early fall for color and fewer crowds.
  • Why we love it: Glacier views, reflective lakes, and dramatic mountain backdrops.
  • Pro tip: Early mornings tend to be quieter and often provide the calmest water for photos.

Valdez, Alaska

Valdez is one of Alaska’s most remote and dramatic coastal towns. Surrounded by towering peaks, waterfalls, and fjords, the scenery here is exactly what you might picture when you think of Alaska. Couples who choose to elope in Valdez typically choose this area for its adventurous feel and the opportunity to explore glaciers and hidden coves by boat or helicopter. The journey to get here also adds to the experience as it’s about a 5.5-hour drive east of Anchorage. If you want your elopement in Alaska to feel like a true expedition, consider eloping in Valdez. ,

  • Best time to elope: Summer, when roads are open and travel conditions are easier.
  • Why we love it: Remote fjords, massive waterfalls, and rugged coastal mountains.
  • Pro tip: Valdez is home to some of the best kayaking, so we definitely recommend including that as part of your Alaska elopement experience.

Juneau & Mendenhall Glacier

If a remote Alaska experience isn’t your vibe, Juneau could be a great fit. The state’s capital city combines convenience with easy access to incredible wilderness. Just outside of town sits Mendenhall Glacier, one of the most recognizable glacier landscapes in the state. There are several trails and scenic viewpoints that make it possible to experience the glacier without a long trek. Or, for a more remote perspective, you can book a helicopter or floatplane.

  • Best time to elope: Summer is peak season in Juneau and the most ideal time if you want to take full advantage of the area’s amenities.
  • Why we love it: A stunning glacier setting that’s easy to reach from town.
  • Pro tip: Consider a helicopter or floatplane for unique angles on the glacier for your ceremony.

4 logistics to keep in mind when planning your Alaska elopement

Alaska’s size and diversity mean you have access to so many unique experiences. However, as with any location, there are a few specific planning considerations to keep in mind:

  • Adventure access: Many of Alaska’s most iconic elopement locations require some form of adventure access, like helicopters, floatplanes, or boats. While this adds another element to planning, it also opens the door to combining multiple locations.
  • Lodging & remoteness: Some of these places to elope in Alaska are fully off the grid, so it’s important to plan accommodations and travel logistics ahead of time and with your ceremony location(s) in mind.
  • Weather & seasons: You probably already know that Alaska gets cold and dark during the winter months. For this reason, we highly recommend summer elopements in Alaska as these months offer the most access. Late spring and early fall can also be good seasons to elope. Just keep in mind that the weather and certain location availability may be limited.
  • Guest size & privacy: Most of our couples who elope in Alaska plan two-person celebrations. Small elopements work best as larger groups may require additional permits or logistical planning that is not as easily suited to the area.
