How to Plan a Seward Elopement in Alaska (Locations, Tips & More)

Deciding to have a Seward elopement is a big step, and honestly one of the best decisions you can make if Alaska is calling your name. The state is massive and full of incredible places, but there’s something about Seward that stands out more than anywhere else we’ve been.

Maybe it’s the way the mountains seem to rise straight out of the ocean, or the fact that you can hop on a boat, helicopter, or floatplane and find yourself completely alone in a matter of minutes. Or maybe it’s the idea of paddling through a glacier lake with icebergs the size of houses floating all around you. Whatever it is, Seward has a way of getting under your skin.

If all of this sounds like exactly what you’ve been looking for and you need help figuring out the details, you’re in the right place. We’re sharing our favorite locations to elope in Seward, the best time of year to visit, activities worth building your day around, where to stay, and a whole lot more. And if you’re still in the early stages of figuring out what an elopement even looks like, our guide on what is an adventure elopement is a great place to start.

Why elope in Seward

Seward elopements have a kind of variety that’s genuinely hard to find anywhere else in Alaska. The landscape alone is stunning, with massive mountains wrapping around a small harbor town, but cross the bay and you’ll find wild blueberry patches, remote islands, and wildlife around every corner.

The people in Seward are also worth mentioning. We’ve worked with a lot of local vendors over the years and can’t say enough good things about them. From hair and makeup artists to florists, bakers, pilots, and boat captains, the locals who live and work in Seward care deeply about making your experience special. It’s one of those things you don’t expect going in and can’t stop thinking about afterward.

If you’re considering other parts of Alaska too, Homer is another beautiful coastal town worth looking at. We’ve written a full guide on planning a Homer Alaska elopement that covers a lot of the same ground.

When to have your Seward elopement

The best window for a Seward Alaska elopement is May through September. As a harbor town, things start to shut down as winter creeps in, so timing matters more here than in some other locations.

Spring elopements mean fewer crowds, a dusting of snow still lingering on the mountains, and a slower pace as the town starts waking up after winter. Summer (June through August) is busier as cruise ships dock and visitors pour in, but it’s also the best time for a helicopter elopement since melting snow opens up more of the mountains and makes remote locations accessible.

Our personal favorite time to visit is September, right after Labor Day. The cruise ships are gone, the crowds have thinned out, and the fall colors are absolutely stunning. Just know that fall weather in Seward can be unpredictable, so flexibility and a solid backup plan go a long way.

If this has you thinking seriously about a Seward elopement, we’re here to help you figure out the details.

Getting to Seward

Getting to Seward is pretty straightforward. There’s one road in and out and it’s about a two hour drive from Anchorage. In the summer, it’s worth factoring in traffic, construction, and the occasional accident when planning your drive down.

If you’d rather skip the drive entirely, the Alaska Railroad runs a scenic route from Anchorage to Seward that’s well worth doing at least once. It’s a stunning ride through the mountains and a fun alternative that a lot of visitors don’t think to consider.

Favorite Seward elopement locations

There are so many incredible spots to get married in and around Seward, whether you’re exploring on foot, by helicopter, or by boat. Here are some of our favorites:

Calisto Peak

Reached by helicopter, Calisto Peak sits high above Seward with some of the most expansive views in the area. Depending on the time of year you’ll find rolling green hills, wildflowers, patches of snow, and a small alpine lake. It’s the kind of place that genuinely takes your breath away when you step off the helicopter.

Lowell Point Beach

Right on the beach in Seward and easy to get to, Lowell Point is a great option if you’re having a small ceremony with family before heading out on a private adventure. You’ve got beautiful views of the mountains across the bay, the water right at your feet, and it’s one of the more accessible spots we shoot at in Seward, making it a great option if you’re bringing a few family members along.

Bear Glacier Lagoon

Accessible by helicopter, Bear Glacier Lagoon is the runoff from Bear Glacier and it’s unlike anything most people have ever seen. A massive lagoon filled with enormous icebergs, surrounded by wildflowers and a beautiful beach to explore. It’s remote, it’s stunning, and it never gets old no matter how many times we’ve been there.

Fox Island Spit

Getting to Fox Island requires a private boat, which is exactly the point. This spot sits out in the middle of Resurrection Bay and depending on the time of year, it’s covered in fireweed, a vivid purple wildflower that grows all over coastal Alaska and happens to be one of our personal favorites (Becky even has it tattooed). Private, remote, and genuinely hard to forget.

Orca Island Yurts

Orca Island is a private property so you need to be a guest to access it, which honestly makes it worth booking as your accommodation for your Seward elopement. You get the ceremony spots, the waterfall you can paddle to by kayak, and an overlook you can hike up to, all completely to yourselves. It’s one of those places that feels totally removed from the rest of the world.

Elopement activity ideas in Seward

One of our favorite activities to include in a Seward elopement is a helicopter flight with Marathon Helicopters. Mike, the pilot, is one of those people who genuinely cares about every single flight he’s a part of. He knows the area inside and out and goes above and beyond to make sure your day is everything you hoped for. Some of the locations we mentioned above are only accessible by helicopter, and Mike is the person we trust to get you there.

Another favorite is taking a private charter boat with Miller’s Landing. There are so many beautiful and intimate spots across Resurrection Bay where you’re practically guaranteed to not see another person. Getting out on the water adds a completely different energy to your elopement day in Seward and is something we’d recommend to almost every couple.

Where to stay for your Seward elopement

Seward has a handful of traditional hotels along the harbor, but there are also some really unique options worth considering.

Orca Island is a collection of yurts on a secluded inlet across the bay from Seward. Each yurt has its own bathroom, kitchen, and a private deck overlooking the water, with kayaks and fishing gear available for guests. It’s a bit more rustic than some other spots, but the setting more than makes up for it.

Salted Roots Cabins are luxury cabins located right on the beach, including two A-frames and a handful of other cabin styles. All guests have access to a sauna, firepit, and the beach, making it a really lovely base for a Seward elopement.

Iceberg Inn is another yurt option, but this one sits right next to Bear Glacier Lagoon and requires a helicopter to get there. Mike from Marathon Helicopters actually built it himself, and waking up next to giant icebergs is about as Alaska as it gets.

How to celebrate

For a small harbor town, Seward has a surprisingly solid food scene and after a long day of celebrating your Seward elopement, you’re going to want to know where to go.

If you’re there in the morning, make a point of stopping into Resurrect Art Coffee House, which is tucked inside a beautiful old church and their pastries sell out early so don’t sleep on it. For dinner, our personal favorite is the Flamingo Lounge. Order the bucket of butt (halibut chunks that are so good you’ll want to order a second one) and thank us later. Seward Brewing Company is perfect if you want something casual with good food and cold beer, and the Cookery is worth it if you want something a little more special for the occasion. For a full list of what’s open and current hours, Visit Seward keeps things pretty up to date.

If you want to end the night the Alaska way, head to Yukon Bar. The walls and ceiling are covered in dollar bills that people have stuck up over the years, they’ve got pull tabs (an Alaska gambling staple), and it’s exactly the kind of place you’ll be talking about long after you leave Seward.

Keep exploring Alaska
